WPForms not sending email

WPForms stores entries, so a missing email usually means the entry is sitting in your dashboard while the notification failed. That is useful — it tells you immediately that the problem is delivery, not the form.

Why this happens

01

Notifications switched off or misrouted

Each form has its own Notifications panel. The Send To Email Address defaults to {admin_email}, which may be an address nobody monitors any more.

02

From Email set to a different domain

WPForms warns about this, but it is easy to miss. Sending as an address outside your domain triggers SPF and DMARC rejection at the recipient.

03

Smart tag resolving to nothing

If Send To uses a smart tag pointing at a field that was later renamed or removed, the notification is addressed to an empty string and never leaves.

04

Conditional logic suppressing the notification

A condition added for one scenario can quietly exclude most real submissions.

How to check it yourself

  1. 01Compare Entries against your inbox — entries present with no email confirms a delivery failure.
  2. 02Open Settings → Notifications and check Send To and From Email.
  3. 03Confirm From Email is on your own domain.
  4. 04Review any conditional logic on the notification.
  5. 05Send a test through WP Mail SMTP's email test tool.

The part you cannot check once

Fixing it is the easy half. Knowing it stays fixed is the hard half.

Every cause above can come back without anyone touching the page. API keys rotate, plugins update, DNS records get edited, licences lapse. The form still renders, still accepts the enquiry, still says thank you — and nothing arrives.

FormWatcher submits an identifiable test enquiry on a schedule and confirms it actually reaches your inbox. If delivery stops, you hear about it — rather than working it out from a quiet month.

Common questions

Entries are showing but no emails arrive. What does that mean?
The form is working and the notification is not. That narrows it to the notification settings or your mail delivery path, and rules out the form itself.
Why does it work for me but not for visitors?
Testing while logged in can behave differently from a first-time visitor with no cookies, on mobile, meeting a consent banner. FormWatcher always tests as a first-time visitor on both desktop and mobile.
